For an entire weekend in Cerreto Guidi you can go back in time to July 1576, when the young Isabella from the Medici family, accompanied by dames and cavaliers, reached the villa to meet with her betrothed Paolo Giordano Orsini. Around the Complesso Mediceo you can meet both nobles and popular folk engaging in games, dances and other entertainments typical during the Renaissance period. A succession of events, visits and performances which lead up to the mysterious death of Isabella, which occurred in Cerreto Guidi on 16th July 1576: don’t miss the final performance which takes place in the splendid setting of the Medici Bridges.

Medicea - Cerreto Guidi
Now in its 42nd edition, the Medicea event is an event which celebrates the DOCG Chianti wine. The main items are dedicated to the wine such as theBiodynamic Wine Culture Conference held in the monumental Villa Medicea and the Rubino Mediceo selection which every year, in collaboration with the Italian Sommelier Association awards a prize for the best wine production in Tuscany. The Exhibition of Historic Farm Machinery also attracts a lot of visitors with the re-enactments of the ancient beating and ploughing of the Cerreto Guidi hills. For music lovers there is the Suoni nella Notte event.

The different town districts compete in these competitions which take place every year along the Arno river using the unique local boats known as “gozzi“. In the Palio con la Montata (with the “climb”), after finishing, a member of the crew has to climb the rope to claim victory.
During the week of the Palio the town is bought to life with food stalls and performances.

The Flight of Cecco Santi - Vinci

Every year the story of Captain Cecco di Santi lives on. A soldier in the Vinci army, he betrayed his town for the love of a noble woman in an enemy town, which led to a horrible penalty: he was thrown from the tower of the Conti Guidi castle. If the captain was able to survive the “flight” from the tower he would be spared his life. Maybe thanks to a last miraculous glass of wine, Cecco managed to “fly” to the nearby hill and was saved. That year there were bumper harvests of grapes, olives and grain.

The last Wednesday in July, a historic procession evokes the most important moments of Cecco’s story leading up to the flight from the tower, commemorated with fireworks.

INNER SURFACE - Art Exhibition at Borgo Pignano (Volterra)

Borgo Pignano, Vitalità Associazione Culturale, Velathri Art Gallery e Comune di Volterra presentano un’esposizione d’arte “Inner Surface”.
Nella maestosa ed elegante cornice della Pignano Art Gallery si sviluppa un progetto artistico che prevede il dialogo di tre artisti, Janine von Thungen, Tadeusz Niescier ed Antonello Viola. Tre diverse nazionalità e tre tecniche a confronto per approfondire il tema della profondità della superficie.
Un ossimoro Inner Surface che raccoglie in sé il potenziale di penetrazione di uno sguardo attento, di una prospettiva non limitata alla semplice apparenza e di una conseguente ed affascinante scoperta del dettaglio appena sottostante. Un’esplorazione della materia, dai riflessi emanati fino alla struttura celata al suo interno, declinata nelle magistrali opere scultoree della tedesca Janine von Thungen, nella fotografia dell’artista polacco Tadeusz Niescier e nelle tecniche miste del poliedrico pittore Antonello Viola. Un’ode alla contemplazione silenziosa, Inner Surface, una collettiva accolta nell’ambiente immerso nella natura e nell’armonia della Pignano
