Porrettana Express

Eight historic trains from June to October on the tracks that made the history of Italy

Unique views over the Apennines, pristine forests inhabited by deer and roe deer, small villages where you can rediscover traditional cuisine and little-known artistic itineraries, a journey into nature and in Italian history: Porrettana Express is born, a project to enhance the territory that unites Tuscany and Emilia Romagna through one of the oldest and most symbolic railway lines in the country, the Porrettana. The initiative, which plans to create a real widespread Railway Ecomuseum, kicks off on Sunday 30 June with the inaugural train of the cycle of eight dedicated journeys, each characterized by carriage activities and significant stages along the route.

Starting from the Historic Rotabili Deposit of Pistoia, some early twentieth-century cars will accompany families and the curious along the route of the one that aims to be known in the world as the Transappenninica of Italy, among small villages immersed in greenery, tunnels and viaducts of ancient memory . The history of the Porrettana line, in fact, has its roots in the crucial years of our country, between the wars that led to independence and the unification of Italy. The first embryo of "rail road destined for public transit" dates back to 1845, when the brothers Bartolomeo, Pietro and Tommaso Cini of San Marcello obtained from the Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold II the authorization to carry out the necessary studies. This led to the signing of the agreement for the construction of the "Central Italy Railway", destined to join the Austrian railway system with the Tuscan network, bringing together five pre-unification states: the Austrian Empire, the Papal States, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Duchy of Modena, Duchy of Parma. Made by the Kingdom of Savoy and then by the newborn Kingdom of Italy, the Porrettana was inaugurated in 1864 and became the backbone of communications between north and central-south. It played a central role during the Great War and until the thirties, when it was outclassed by the Direttissima Prato-Bologna.

The project leader, the result of a team effort that involved numerous subjects from small territorial realities to public institutions and bodies, is Transapp, an association that brings together numerous Tuscan and Emilian organizations. Porrettana Express is promoted and supported by the Municipalities of Pistoia and San Marcello Piteglio, by the Tuscany Region, by Toscana Promozione Turistica and by the CARIPT Foundation, with the decisive contribution of the FS Foundation. To coordinate communication and promotion Giorgio Tesi Editrice, which over the years has been able to establish itself for the interventions in support of the Pistoia area and its tourist, historical and artistic value conducted both locally, nationally and internationally.

The Pantagruel Cooperative will coordinate guided tours, educational workshops and activities up and down the tracks, while the writing, interpretation and recording of the story about the history of the railway that will be listened to by passengers while traveling is organized by the Cultural Center Il Funaro. This first cycle of trips represents the beginning of an ambitious journey destined to grow over the years, also thanks to the collaboration with the Educational Services of the Municipality of Pistoia, with the involvement of schools and local realities.

The Transappenninica is presented as a panoramic gateway to the Pistoia mountain system, dotted with a dense network of paths for lovers of outdoor sports, in particular trekking and mountain biking, new perspectives and an artistic and museum heritage still in large part to be exploited, which make it a destination of excellence for families and travelers looking for a full immersion experience to the rhythm of nature. A series of trips that - in collaboration with Coldiretti - also wants to rediscover and enhance a food and wine tradition made up of typical products and ancient recipes.

One day in Carmignano

Among the places in Tuscany that I care about most, there is the small town of Carmignano, nestled among the beautiful hills of Montalbano and inhabited since the Paleolithic. This is a landscape with well-maintained cypress trees, vineyards and olive groves, capable of inspiring artists and offering a breath of fresh air for those seeking to escape city life.

As much as I completely embrace the daily chaos of Florence, the famous city of the Renaissance, it is in the deepest places of the Tuscan countryside like Carmignano that I savor the secrets of Tuscany.

The territory is rich from the artistic and cultural point of view. Here there are villas and residences of the Medici era and, still here, many characteristic events are organized. A famous annual tradition is the Feast of San Michele with the Palio dei ciuchi, an event that takes place at the end of each September, which winds between the four districts of the city (white, blue, yellow, green), one against the another with an unusual race involving donkeys. Every third Sunday in October the sale of their prized dried figs officially opens in a special festival with local producers.

This year they will bring their blues to the stage, Black Stone Cherry, followed by Thirty Seconds To Mars and the day after by Eric Gales along with Robben Ford. July 8th will be the turn of Noel Gallagher & The High Flying Birds, while Ben Harper with Innocent Criminals will close the festival on July 10th.
